Movensys Wins Korean Government Contract to Develop AI-based Integrated Control Platform for Autonomous Mobile Robots

Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy grants KRW 3 billion over three years to the Movensys-Skylla-Korea University consortium
´º½ºÀÏÀÚ: 2024-07-26

SEOUL -- Movensys today announced that it has been awarded a national government contract as part of a consortium to develop an integrated platform that leverages AI to improve the accuracy and compatibility of autonomous mobile robot (AMR) control software.

A consortium comprised of Movensys, its U.S. subsidiary Skylla Technologies (Skylla), and Korea University has been selected to support the “Development of Real-time Integrated Control Software Platform for Autonomous Mobile Robots using Generative AI” project in the International Joint Technology Development X&D business, led by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Boston-based Skylla is known for its world-class technology solutions in autonomous mobile robot (AMR) route optimization and collision avoidance, while Korea University’s HRI Lab and Mint Lab each have expert research capabilities in human-robot interaction (HRI) and multi-robot control system. Starting this month until June 2027, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will provide 3 billion won over three years.

AMRs, which are at the center of shaping the future of technology, enable robots to perceive, judge, and control without direct human intervention. They are seen as having high utility value for their applicability across various industries, such as logistics, distribution, manufacturing, and defense. According to the market research firm Next Move Strategy Consulting (Nextmsc), the global autonomous mobile robots market size is growing at an annual average of 34%, from about 1.2 billion dollars in 2020 to over 7 billion dollars in 2026.

Movensys’ robot control technology can be integrated and applied to various systems, and its key competitive advantage is its ability to perform real-time motion control with precision. Through this initiative, the consortium aims to develop an all-in-one control solution (tentatively named “Skylla Nova”) that can simultaneously control autonomous driving, wheel motors, and 6-axis collaborative robots with a single software through real-time sensor fusion. In particular, the consortium plans to enable AMRs to communicate with process control engineers, including recognizing requirements or requests and determining employee work performance, by using generative AI and vision AI technologies.

Movensys announced that through this development initiative, it will integrate the heterogeneous controllers of autonomous driving, 6-axis collaborative robots, and wheels within the AMR into a single software solution. By doing so, the company expects to maximize the AMR’s operational performance, battery life, while significantly reducing its hardware footprint, and enable human-AI collaboration, using Large Language Models (LLM). Also, through step-by-step productization, Movensys aims to perform site verifications and sell licenses as early as within the year. The company expects to secure 5% market share of the global AMR market within the next 5 years and to generate annual sales of over 100 billion won. Movensys will also seek to expand the global AMR market, targeting the semiconductor packaging market (semiconductor back-end process), where precise movement and action in narrow corridors is required.

Boo-ho Yang, founder and Chairman of Movensys, stated, “Movensys has been highly evaluated for our successful application of the pure software-based motion control solution, WMX, to various domestic and international businesses and industries. We have been selected for this national project in recognition of the potential and marketability of AMR integrated control technology.” He added, “Together with Skylla and the Korea University researchers, we will develop a more sophisticated and smart integrated control platform to help Korea lead the global autonomous mobile robots market.”
